The Setting: Our campus is located on 70 acres of secluded forest high above the Yuba River gorge in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The institute is off-the-grid, so we make our own electricity by operating entirely on solar and generator power, a wind turbine, and offering propane light and heat. The grounds offer walking trails, meditation gardens, vegetable garden, and shrines to saints of all religions. We are located five miles from Ananda Village, the 900-acre main community. While most of our classes are on campus, some classes and practicums are held in the village. We intentionally limit enrollment to ensure a friendlier, family-style environment with many opportunities for cross-age interaction.
Boarding & Facilities: Student housing may be in a small dorm, group house or garden bungalow. A dining room serves residents, students and guests delicious vegetarian meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. On site is a small library, office, lounge, computer room, phone room, classrooms, and a large meditation temple for yoga and meditation. Ananda Village offers a market, deli and bakery, laundry room, video rental, thrift shop, jewelry shop, a gift, book and clothing boutique, and more. The picturesque towns of Nevada City and Grass Valley are a 30-40 minute drive from the institute and offer shopping, movie theatres and cafes. Nearby recreation includes hiking, skiing, river and lake swimming, kayaking, canoeing, mountain climbing, biking and more. As we are higher in elevation than Ananda Village, cell phones can operate from many locations at the institute. It's ideal for students to have their own car, but the institute does offer a van shuttle to and from Ananda Village at select times.
