Student Life

Being released from the expectations of high school, college, and worldly work, participants in the New Horizons Gap Year Program will have a rare opportunity to live a spacious life and develop an ever-widening sense of self. Surrounded by a supportive and uplifting community, they will be encouraged to breathe more deeply and ponder more expansively.

Spiritual practice

Students will explore both ancient wisdom traditions and contemporary philosophies of consciousness, and establish a daily routine of spiritual practice (sadhana). In doing so, they will endeavor to discover their unique dharma and regularly employ practical approaches to actualizing their work in the world.

Studies

Over the course of nine months, students in the New Horizons Gap Year Program will investigate all facets of the universal human endeavor through immersion-based study and applications of concepts found in field of Health and Wellness, Sustainable Living Skills, World Cultures and Consciousness, Small Community Living, Inspirational Arts, Conscious Entrepreneurship, and Nature Studies.

Travel

Structured travel experiences throughout both California and India bring inner and outer forays in new lands. Opportunities to practice harmonious community living arise daily, as students collaborate in running the campus and engage in decision making processes while traveling. Unique leadership opportunities are offered as the year culminates with the New Horizons Gap Year personalized capstone initiatives.

Meals

Meals will consist of well balanced and nutritious vegetarian cuisine. When possible and reasonable, local ingredients will be incorporated. As part of a sustainable living skill set, participants of New Horizons will participate in menu planning and cooking during the year.

Allergies and food intolerances such as gluten and soy-free can be accommodated. However, due to the vigorous nature of activities on and off-campus, as well as the limitations of certain foods during backcountry and international travel, New Horizons cannot accommodate highly restricted diets such as raw, paleo and grain-free. For specific concerns, please contact New Horizons.

Outcomes

Ultimately, through intentional daily living practices and unique transformative experiences, students will become what they study—cooperative community members, sustainable builders, creative writers, world travelers, naturalists, compassionate leaders, meditators, innovative business owners, and spiritually realized adults.
